2026 Faculty
Glaucoma
JOANN GIACONI, MD
Jules Stein Eye Institute | Los Angeles, CA
Dr. JoAnn Giaconi is faculty and the Fellowship Program Director in the Glaucoma Division at the Stein Eye Institute where she actively practices and operates on patients with glaucoma and cataracts. She also serves as Chief of Ophthalmology for the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration—a major teaching site for residents and fellows of the Stein Eye Institute and medical students from the David Geffen School of Medicine and Charles Drew School of Medicine. Dr. Giaconi has published over 50 research papers with colleagues in the areas of glaucoma and in medical education.
Dr. Giaconi is a member of a number of professional organizations and has served in various leadership roles for these organizations, such as the American Glaucoma Society (AGS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO), Women in Ophthalmology (WIO), California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (CAEPS), and serves as a Diplomate for the American Board of Ophthalmology. She has been the recipient of the AUPO-AAO Excellence in Medical Student Education Award and an AGS Young Clinician-Scientist Award. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has awarded Dr. Giaconi with an Achievement Award and a Senior Achievement Award for her education and advocacy services to the organization. She currently serves as the AAO’s Secretary for Communications and Chief Medical Editor of the weekly Academy Express.
Neuro-Ophthalmology
JANE C. EDMOND, MD

Dr. Jane Edmond is Professor and Chair, Department of Ophthalmology, Wong Family Distinguished University Chair, Director of the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute, and Interim Vice Dean for Professional Practice at The University of Texas at Austin, Dell Medical School.
Dr. Edmond’s alma mater is The University of Texas at Austin, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Special Honors in Zoology and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 1981. She received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 1985. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology, BCM, in 1989. She completed two fellowships: Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, 1990, and Neuro-Ophthalmology, BCM, 2006.
From 1991 to 1997 she served as faculty at BCM and Texas Children’s Hospital. From 1997 to 2003 she served as faculty at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Scheie Eye Institute, and Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2003 she returned to Houston, BCM and Texas Children’s Hospital, and was promoted to Professor in 2016. In January, 2018, Dr. Edmond became the Founding Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. Since that time Dr. Edmond has overseen the construction of two ophthalmology clinics, hired staff and 7 faculty, and obtained approval from the ACGME for a new ophthalmology residency, 3 residents per year, with the first class graduating in 2026. The department is comprised of approximately 40 faculty, a blend of UT employed, and clinical and affiliate faculty in the Austin community.
Dr. Edmond’s clinical and academic focus has been pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, the ophthalmic impact of craniosynostosis and pediatric brain tumors, and management of complex strabismus. She has served as an author on over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 12 book chapters, and has delivered 115 national lectures, 16 international lectures, and 20 named lectures and visiting professor presentations.
Dr. Edmond has been involved in graduate medical education. To date, she has trained over 200 residents from the ophthalmology departments of BCM, Wills Eye Hospital and Scheie Eye Institute, and trained 49 pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology fellows.
In 2024, Dr. Edmond served as the President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Her previous leadership roles include President-Elect, Past President, Trustee at Large on the AAO Board of Trustees, and Chair of following AAO committees: Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist (LEO)/MOCEC Committee, Awards Committee, Membership Advisory Committee, Director of AAO Subspecialty Day in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and faculty for the Basic and Clinical Science Course, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Volume 6. She is the recipient of the AAO Senior Honor Award.
Dr. Edmond also served as President of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) from 2019-2020. Her previous leadership roles include Director at Large on the AAPOS Board of Directors, AAPOS Councilor to the AAO, and member of the editorial board, Journal of AAPOS. She is the recipient of the AAPOS Senior Achievement Award and the Marshal Parks Medal.
Uveitis
PHOEBE LIN, MD, PHD
Cleveland Clinic | Cleveland, OH
Phoebe Lin, MD, PhD, graduated summa cum laude, Biochemistry, from Washington University, AOA with Honors from the MD/PhD program at the University of Illinois, then completed ophthalmology residency at UCSF, a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Duke University, and a uveitis fellowship at Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University. At Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, she performs clinical care in ocular inflammatory and retinal diseases, vitreoretinal surgery, educates residents and fellows, and performs research identifying novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of ocular inflammatory disease and macular degeneration. Specifically, her lab utilizes animal models of uveitis (an inflammatory condition of the middle lining of the eye) to address several pathways: leukocyte migration in autoimmune uveitis, immune regulation as a target for autoimmune uveitis, and the role of the mammalian commensal intestinal microbiota in intestinal immunity and systemic immunity affecting the development and mitigation of ocular inflammation. Dr. Lin’s lab is also investigating the impact of an intestinal dysbiosis that occurs in age-related macular degeneration, a disease that is caused by disruptions in innate immunity and fatty acid metabolism. She has published over 100 articles, book chapters, and books.
Oculoplastics
SCOTT M. GOLDSTEIN, MD
University of Pennsylvania & Tri-Century Eye Care | Southampton, PA
Dr. Goldstein earned his BS in Business from Cornell university in 1992 and his MD degree from Boston University School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors in 1996. He then completed a year of general medical training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1997 where he was named Intern of the Year. That was followed by a three-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Scheie Eye Institute where he was awarded the top resident teaching award for three consecutive years. He was chosen to serve as chief resident in his final year. In 2002, he completed a two-year pediatric & adult ophthalmic plastic and aesthetic surgery fellowship based at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Goldstein was then appointed Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 where he served as the director of medical education for the department of ophthalmology and oversaw the Oculoplastic surgery division at the Philadelphia Veterans Hospital. He was awarded the 2003 Golden Apple award as outstanding Scheie Eye faculty teacher of the year.
In 2003, Dr. Goldstein shifted his energy and expertise to Bucks County, PA creating a first-rate oculoplastic service, serving patients of all ages. He was an active teacher of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia from 2005 until the Covid Pandemic in 2020. He still has an adjunct clinical faculty appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and the Jefferson Medical College. He is a fellow of both the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He served as the president of the Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia in 2006 and was the founding President of Greater Philadelphia Ophthalmic Society in 2007. He has also served as President if the University of Pennsylvania Department of Ophthalmology Alumni association since 2009. Dr. Goldstein has been a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology executive board since 2016 and is the 2021-23 President elect. He is a graduate of the American Academy’s Leadership Development Program XXI, Class of 2019 and most recently was elected to the executive board of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as Treasurer from 2020-20025.
Dr. Goldstein is a distinguished author in the medical literature with multiple articles and book chapters to his credit. He is a frequently lecturer regionally, nationally, and internationally in the areas of Oculoplastic and aesthetic surgery. He is happily married for over 28 years to his college love and has three fantastic children. In his spare time he enjoys to cook, spend time outdoors, travel with his family and is an avid hockey fan.
