This program is designed for ophthalmic medical personnel, including assistants, technicians, technologists, and registered nurses.

ACCREDITATION
This program has been awarded 9.5 Group A CECs (a maximum of 6.5 CECs per attendee) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology. An additional presentation (Missions Possible) has been submitted to JCAHPO for consideration of continuing education credits.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, participants should have gained knowledge of:

  • Modes of transmission of commonly encountered infectious diseases presented by patients and co-workers; implementing standards of practice for infection control program; understanding of immunizations relevant to healthcare workers.
  • Common eyelid lesions, potential malignant lesions, and basic indicators of benign and potentially malignant lesions.
  • Common eye emergencies, evaluation and treatment of common emergencies, and triage skills needed in the clinic setting.
  • Normal eye muscle movements, eye muscle movement abnormalities in 3rd, 4th, and 6th nerve palsies; skills needed for a technician to work up a patient presenting with a cranial nerve palsy.
  • Differences between primary and secondary Sjogren’s syndrome, signs and symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome, diagnostic tests applicable to Sjogren’s syndrome, treatment outcomes, and screening for systemic symptoms that can be associated with autoimmune diseases with ocular involvement.
  • Presentations of retinal detachment, treatment options to manage retinal detachment, appropriate patient testing and pre operative work up, and the technician’s role in managing patient expectations.
  • Different types of electronic health record systems available to a practice and their partner organizations; understand the evolving landscape of Health IT as it relates to Health Policy in the U.S.
  • Treatment and prognosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity, the importance of follow-up care for ROP infants, and prevention of ROP.
  • Scleral lens usage and indications, hybrid lens technology and design, use of piggyback lens systems, and indications for bandage contact lens fitting; identify possible future indications of contact lens technology.
  • Common eyelid malpositions, appropriate treatment options including surgery, and prognosis for normal function and appearance post-treatment.
  • Describe regulatory changes in coding and apply those changes to practices that will positively impact compliance and reimbursement.
  • Identify pathology as it relates to various ocular structures; discuss the importance of standard abbreviations; list the diagnosis as related to the chief complaint as the primary assessment; summarize recommendations.
  • Identify deviations and describe their causes, describe how to classify deviations, demonstrate tests for measuring and how to properly notate results.
  • Need for medical mission sin developing countries, planning and organizing a surgical missions trip, tips on short-term missions, working in a high volume surgical missions setting, and how to participate in medial missions.
